Plymouth Argyle are preparing for life back in League One following their relegation from the Championship last season.

Despite a strong second half of the season, Plymouth were unable to prevent their relegation to the third tier, and they were dealt a further blow as manager Miron Muslic departed to take over at German side Schalke in May.

Muslic has been replaced at Home Park by former Watford head coach Tom Cleverley, and the 35-year-old has been given plenty of backing in the transfer market by owner Simon Hallett, with nine new players arriving in Devon so far this summer.

The Pilgrims have also lost a number of their stars following relegation, including Maxi Talovierov, Adam Randell, Mustapha Bundu and Ryan Hardie, and while there are unlikely to be too many more departures, Cleverley could decide to send some of the club's younger players out on loan, such as midfielder Caleb Roberts and striker Freddie Issaka.

Roberts made just six appearances in all competitions for Argyle last season, and while Issaka did feature slightly more regularly as he scored one goal in 20 appearances, only four of those came from the start, so there are question marks over whether the pair will be part of Cleverley's plans for the upcoming campaign.

When asked which players he believes should be sent out on loan this summer, FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge urged Cleverley to give the green light for Roberts and Issaka to depart temporarily, claiming that a season in League Two or non-league could be hugely beneficial for the pair.

"I think there are two players who really need to go out on loan, and they are Caleb Roberts and Freddie Issaka," Luke told FLW.

"I would probably say that Issaka would be the most important one.

"Personally, I felt they should have gone out on loan last season.

"They're young, they haven't really played men's football, they played a few minutes here and there, but I don't think playing sporadically last year was good for their development at all.

"I believe they both need to go out on loan and play men's football week in, week out, whether it be in League Two or even playing with the likes of Truro or Torquay.

"I think it would do their development the world of good, and, in the long run, it will help Argyle get the best out of those players.

"There's also Tegan Finn, who is an excellent player at Argyle, and he is probably the one young lad who has the biggest ceiling, in my opinion.

"It will be interesting to see if he will go out on loan or if he will continue to be involved a bit with the first team this year."

Plymouth Argyle transfer business will be a concern for Caleb Roberts and Freddie Issaka

Cleverley was willing to give young players an opportunity during his time in charge of Watford, but as Plymouth will be expected to challenge for automatic promotion in League One next season, it remains to be seen how much the club's academy products will feature.

The Pilgrims have already brought in three central midfielders this summer in Bradley Ibrahim, Ayman Benarous and Caleb Watts, and with Joe Edwards and Malachi Boateng already at Home Park, Roberts could find his game time limited once again next season.

The departure of Ryan Hardie could open the door for Issaka, particularly as new signings Owen Oseni and Aribim Pepple are both unproven in the third tier, but it seems likely Argyle will bring in a high-profile striker before the end of the window, meaning the 18-year-old could follow Roberts in heading out on loan.
