Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow ahead of a potential summer swoop, according to the Telegraph.
Spurs are poised to add at least one new goalkeeper to the ranks this summer, and Darlow is on their shortlist.
The Tottenham transfer target has played a key role in his side’s bid to retain their Premier League status, keeping three clean sheets in league starts.
Tottenham are preparing to lose Guglielmo Vicario this summer. His performances over the past two seasons have been underwhelming.
Back-up goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky is also set to head out on loan to gain experience, prompting the need for a summer addition.
They are already laying the groundwork for summer transfers, with the club in advanced talks to sign Marcos Senesi as a free agent.
Tottenham need a ceiling raiser between the sticks, and Darlow hardly fits that description. His numbers are, at best, underwhelming.
They point to a goalkeeper performing below the league average, not one capable of elevating a side pushing for European places.
He does not represent a clear upgrade on Vicario, whose inconsistency has already forced Tottenham into the market.
Swapping one unreliable option for another does little to address the root problem.
If Tottenham are serious about raising their ceiling, they should target a younger, high-upside profile such as Sunderland’s Robin Roefs.
Darlow offers neither long-term value nor elite short-term performance. He should be viewed as a back-up option for Spurs to support Roefs.
