Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s final England squad before the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to Football Espana, the former Liverpool defender had rediscovered fitness and a starting berth under Alvaro Arbeloa.
This has been the first prolonged spell this season with both Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal fit, yet Carvajal has largely sat on the bench and the 33-year-old was not selected by Spain. Even so, Tuchel picked Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento and Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence ahead of Alexander-Arnold.
Midfield team-mate Jude Bellingham made the squad despite not playing for Real Madrid since the start of February. He is aiming to return from injury on Sunday against Atletico Madrid in the derby, although there is no certainty he will be cleared to play.
Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, has also been called up. He has been in good form this season but has dipped lately, featuring in only four of Barcelona’s last seven games without a goal or an assist, his longest such run of the campaign.
Tuchel has previously made headlines over the pair, apologising in September for describing aspects of Bellingham’s behaviour as repulsive. He has also praised Alexander-Arnold’s ability and backed him to shine at Real Madrid, saying he needs to feel trust from his managers, and for now the full-back appears on the fringes of the World Cup picture.
