Aston Villa manager Unai Emery believes his side’s 3-1 win over Fulham can provide the confidence they need to push forward after a difficult start to the Premier League season.
Villa secured their first league victory of the campaign thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emi Buendia, who turned the game around after Raul Jimenez had given Fulham an early lead.
Speaking to SkySports after the game, Emery admitted he was satisfied with the performance, particularly the way his team responded after falling behind.
“Happy. Overall, we kept the consistency we achieved on Thursday in the Europa League,” he said.“We started a little bit under our necessary energy on the field. We conceded one goal, and then it was a difficult moment, but we reacted more than tactically.“Then we were being aggressive, trying to get into the box. The result was through our energy and through our wishes to come back.”
The Villa boss also highlighted the importance of Watkins in getting his side back on track in front of goal.
“For the team, it is very important. We were not scoring goals. We needed the goals through Watkins, Buendia and McGinn,” Emery explained.“With the supporters, we need to transmit energy. The result is getting balance.”
While Emery acknowledged there is still much work to do, he hopes the result will give Villa a foundation to build upon.
“Hopefully it can help us get progressively better,” he added.
Villa now sit 16th in the Premier League table with just one win from their opening six games. Emery and his players will be hoping this performance marks the beginning of a turnaround in form.
Villa will now turn their focus to Feyenoord for their second Europa League fixture
