Manchester United’s search for a striker is ramping up with Ruben Amorim desperate to add some much needed firepower to his ranks for the upcoming season.
After missing out on Liam Delap, United have turned their attention elsewhere and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres appears to be high on Amorim’s shortlist.
A move for the Swedish goal machine would certainly be a blockbuster purchase and it’s a move backed by celebrity United fan, Usain Bolt.
Bolt was quizzed on the transfer by Swedish media and the once fastest man on the planet believes Amorim’s previous relationship with the striker will eventually get the deal over the line.
“Yes, definitely. I think it’s close to happening, precisely because of Amorim. I think he will sign,” he said.
United have held initial talks with Sporting over the deal but negotiating a fee will be difficult with the selling club playing hard ball.
Bolt recognised that the Portuguese champions will demand a hefty fee for their prized asset but is keen to see Gyökeres swap Lisbon for Manchester in the coming weeks.
“There seems to be a bit of a problem with how much they (Sporting) are asking for Gyökeres, but hopefully we can pay and get the deal to go through,” he said.
“We’ll see what happens, I’m looking forward to him (Gyökeres) coming in. Because we need stable strikers.”
The Jamaican is looking forward to the new campaign and believes United are on the right road with Amorim, predicting “in two years, we will be good,” if things go as planned over the next twelve months.
United will certainly be expected to improve on their lowly 15th place finish last season and the signing of a top quality centre forward is paramount to that improvement.
Amorim will be desperate for INEOS to deliver over the summer and provide him with the relevant tools going into his first full season in charge.
A busy summer is ahead and getting Gyökeres through the doors would be a huge statement of intent by the club as they attempt to bridge the gap back to the top of the Premier League.
