Valencia’s right-back role looks cursed after Meunier’s late switch to Sunderland | OneFootball

According to AS, Valencia believed Meunier was set to sign before he chose Sunderland at the last moment, a heavy blow to planning. The club have indicated another player will come in for that role.

A late move for Andrés García could be another chapter in a position that has long tested Valencia. There was a time when Juan Cruz Sol, Carrete, Quique, Angloma and Curro Torres owned the right flank.

With Miguel Brito, off-field issues began to creep into the role. A mainstay for Emery, his nights out, late arrivals and disciplinary cases steadily eroded his standing.

Joao Pereira and Barragán held the fort in the pre-Lim years and the start of the Lim era, without much sparkle. Joao Cancelo, among Meriton’s first signings, spent about a week hidden in a hotel before his move could be announced, and despite his quality never nailed down the spot, alternating with Martín Montoya.

Piccini arrived to be a pillar under Marcelino. He had bright spells, then a serious knee injury sidelined him for a long time and ultimately pushed him towards the exit. Marcelino covered with Wass, a midfielder turned stopgap for almost two seasons.

Thierry Correia, who left last June, endured repeated injuries and long absences. Bordalás brought in Foulquier from Getafe to plug gaps. Later came winter stopgaps like Max Aarons, four appearances, and Renzo Saravia, five, both under Corberán.
