Sport Bild reports that VfB Stuttgart are hoping that Bayern Munich will be forced to lower their asking price for Alexander Nübel, opening the door for a permanent switch to the club.
It has previously been reported that Stuttgart will not make an attempt to keep Nübel at the club permanently after the expiry of his loan at the end of the season; instead, they will promote current Paderborn keeper Dennis Seimen to number one.
However, their stance may be changing.
Talks with the Bundesliga leaders about Nübel’s future are set to be held in the coming weeks. As Bayern already have Jonas Urbig at the club, they do need a replacement for Manuel Neuer as their number one, and Nübel is unlikely to want to play as a number two. Which means a return to the Allianz Arena is currently out of the question.
The Swabians hope that Bayern will be unable to sell Nübel at the price they want, which has previously been reported at €20-25m, and they will then lower their asking price to a fee that Stuttgart will be able to justify for the German international.
The current sticking point is the salary of Nübel. At Bayern, he currently earns €10-11m a year, while at Mercedestraße, they only pay a third of his salary. Meaning, if the 29-year-old wants to stay in Stuttgart, he will more than likely have to take a significant pay cut.
