(Video) Arne Slot breaks silence on Salah storm after viral comments
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot responded publicly for the first time to Mohamed Salah’s fiery post match comments which triggered wave of controversy around Anfield.
The escalation comes just 48 hour after Salah suggested someone inside the club “doesn’t want him here”.
Liverpool then followed through by dropping Salah from the squad travelling to Italy for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Inter Milan.
Facing the media in Milan, Slot said he genuinely surprised by Salah’s claims and insisted he had not sensed any deterioration in their relationship.
“It was surprise to me when I heard he gave those comments” Slot said. “Before Saturday, we had spoken a lot, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. I didn’t feel the relationship had broken down”..
However Slot stressed that Salah has the right to feel how he feels:
“He has the right to think what he thinks. I just didn’t experience it that way”
Slot revealed that the only communication with Salah since Saturday was to inform him he would not travel to Milan:
“We let him know he is not travelling. That was the only communication”
“I believe there is always way back for player”..
Salah has been substitute for three straight match , something that triggered his frustration.
Slot justified the decision by pointing to Liverpool’s struggles this season:
“We looked vulnerable against Forest & PSV. I tried to find solutions. We won with extra midfielder against West Ham.. so I used it again versus Sunderland , then changed shape against Leeds”.
Slot also admitted Salah could have started on the right:
“I could have played Mo instead of Hugo Ekitike yes.. but I decided to play Hugo”
When asked directly, Slot could not offer certainty:
“I have no clue. I cannot answer that at this moment”
Salah claimed there is figure at the club who doesn't want him anymore. Slot refused to speculate:
“The only one who can answer that is Mo himself”.
“Then I should know exactly what he means. I do not”
Slot described the Egyptian’s response as:
“A simple one”.
The Dutchman was firm:
“I don’t feel my authority has been undermined. This is not about me... it is about the team and the club”..
Slot added that it affected the atmosphere around Anfield:
“It is difficult to see staff members who work so hard affected by this situation”.
