Villarreal now have their full group of World Cup players under Iñigo Pérez, with Renato Veiga and Alex Freeman joining the Italian camp on Wednesday. Their arrivals complete the club’s staggered returns.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the squad has been at Novarello Sporting Center in Novara since Sunday, preparing for the Como Cup and fine-tuning for LaLiga, which starts on 15 August.
Pre-season was built around progressive reintegration after the World Cup. Those on international duty received extra rest and came back in line with when their tournaments ended.
The first to return were Logan Costa, Pape Gueye and Nicolas Pepe last week. The Cape Verde defender, Senegal midfielder and Ivory Coast forward travelled to the Netherlands with the team, then on to Italy.
Canada duo Tani Oluwaseyi and Tajon Buchanan linked up at the start of this week and immediately began physical and tactical work with the group.
With Veiga and Freeman in, Pérez can work with all his internationals as he builds the new Villarreal.
With just over two weeks to go, the staff aim to level fitness, narrow preparation gaps and embed the game model. High pressing, intensity after loss and coordination between lines have led sessions in Italy.
The Como Cup offers minutes, controlled workloads, different partnerships and a platform to integrate the late returnees.
