Five days after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the World Cup last 16, Vinicius Junior voiced his lingering sadness in an Instagram post. According to L'Équipe, the Real Madrid winger used the message to set out his feelings.

The 25-year-old delivered a standout tournament, scoring four goals and providing one assist, despite the Seleçao’s premature exit.

He said he had struggled to find the right words after another World Cup disappointment and needed a few days to take a step back. He added that support from people of all ages made it hard to remain silent.

Calling the national shirt the greatest pride of his life, he said going out in the last 16 was difficult to describe. He stressed how hard he had prepared and how focused he had been, and spoke of immense frustration.

Vinicius felt the squad were strong enough to go further, yet they did not manage it. He apologised and said he would keep fighting for the shared dream of returning Brazil to the summit of world football.
