Ole Werner has a perfectly balanced record against Augsburg so far: three wins, one draw and three defeats. After a record-setting 6-0 win in the reverse fixture, the aim on Saturday is to repeat the feat.

The RBL head coach explained his approach to the game and answered questions from the media at the pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Augsburg’s strengths

  1. “Augsburg have clear patterns, and they’ve got a lot of good footballers in central areas who want the ball. In possession they’ve found a way in recent weeks to change the pace of the game at the right moments, and they’ve also been extremely clinical in the last few games. The match will also be decided in the one-v-ones. They haven’t picked up their recent results by chance – they’ve played well.So it’ll be a tough task for us. But we know what we can do and we want to build on the last few games. It’ll again come down to how clinical we are with our chances. We need to be sharp in both boxes.”

The 6-0 win in the reverse fixture

  1. “It doesn’t help us much to focus on the reverse fixture – not least because they’ve got a different coach on the touchline now. Usually you only have something like that happen once in a season. Both teams are also six months further on, and the Augsburg of today has nothing to do with the Augsburg back then. That’s why it’s important we don’t make it a big talking point, because it won’t help us on Saturday. What matters is that we play to our absolute best if we want to win. That’s the priority.”

Competition out wide

  1. “We’ve got a lot of quality in the wide areas and plenty of lads who can play there. It’s hard to keep everyone happy. It’s always a case of weighing who is in the best form from our point of view and who suits the opponent.Recently Yan and Toni have had the edge. But it’s not as if Tidi or Baka are miles off starting. That’s up to them. You can tell they’re itching to get back in from the start.”

The business end of the season

  1. “At this stage, the best advice is always to take it week by week. Every team is playing for something. It’s incredibly tight – you can see that in the points totals. Our points tally compared to recent years is good, but other teams are picking up points too. The key is that we keep developing and improving. Then we can head into the final phase with confidence and real enjoyment. For me it’s always the best time of the season, because everyone’s energy is focused on one goal. I feel we’re well prepared, but we still need to take a step forward in terms of being more clinical.”

Rômulo’s back-heel magic

  1. “Everything came together there – it was a brilliant finish from him. It wasn’t the first time he’s scored with a back-heel. With his back to goal he’s very creative. It was important for us, but it also did him good. Scoring helps any striker. He’s made a very good impression this week.”
