West Brom and Wolves will have greater financial flexibility from next season after Championship clubs approved new spending rules.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, it was confirmed on Friday that clubs voted in favour of a squad cost ratio, with 20 of the 24 teams backing the change, above the 16 required.
Since 2017/18 the second tier has operated under profit and sustainability rules allowing £39m losses over three years, a limit that has tripped up several sides including Albion. The new system caps spending on player costs at 85 per cent of football revenue and permits an annual £10m capital injection.
Wolves, set for relegation to the Championship, did not vote because they remain a Premier League club, however they will benefit from the change. Albion were set to support the switch and have been leading advocates since Shilen Patel’s Bilkul Football bought the club from Guochuan Lai more than two years ago.
Albion were docked two points last month after breaching the £39m limit across three years. The club maintains its innocence, and after receiving written reasons last week, chose not to appeal having already secured safety.
Elsewhere, League One clubs were set to vote on aligning with League Two by cutting permitted spending from 60 per cent of turnover to 50. A salary cap is backed by some, but it is not on the ballot.
