West Ham have one solution they must pursue amid speculation over Crysencio Summerville's future

West Ham will be targeting automatic promotion back to the Premier League next season.

The Hammers finished 18th in the top flight, ending a 14-year stint in the division, and Nuno Espírito Santo will be seeking a top two finish in the Championship in 2027.

It has been a busy summer so far, although the club have yet to confirm a single new signing to the first team squad.

The London outfit’s focus has been more on sales, with Mateus Fernandes notably departing in an £85 million move to Tottenham Hotspur.

But further departures could follow, even with confirmation that Jarrod Bowen will be staying at the London Stadium this season.

One player that is increasingly likely to depart is Crysencio Summerville, who has been linked with the likes of AS Roma and Aston Villa.

West Ham losing Summerville is inevitable at this stage, and a natural consequence to relegation.

The winger has shown to be a Premier League level talent, and his exploits at the World Cup for the Netherlands have only raised his stock further.

But the Hammers shouldn’t panic when Summerville is sold, as there is no shortage of potential options that can be signed to replace him.

One player that the Championship side must consider is Ipswich Town forward Jaden Philogene.

The 24-year-old would be an ambitious signing due to the interest being shown in him from across Europe, with the likes of Roma, Bologna and Benfica all keen on his signature.

It’s unclear whether he would be willing to drop down to the second division given the opportunity to move abroad.

But as a long-term option, there is little reason to doubt that West Ham are the better place to be.

The Hammers have recent European pedigree, and have a vast amount of resources in comparison to Ipswich, so it’s easy to imagine them leapfrogging Gary O’Neill’s side in the next one or two years.

This could make them an attractive long-term proposition, even at the cost of taking a short-term step backwards.

Philogene had an excellent campaign for Ipswich, despite having to compete with Jack Clarke for minutes on the left flank under Kieran McKenna.

The winger featured 35 times in the league and contributed 12 goals and two assists, proving crucial to their promotion success.

At a Championship level, he produced impressive numbers, including 3.11 shots per 90, as well as an xG on target of 0.45 per 90 (all stats from Fotmob).

In possession, his 1.58 dribbles each game last season was a strong figure, and he won 5.82 duels, showing he can more than handle the physicality of the division.

Philogene would be an ideal fit for Espírito Santo’s style of play, and the sale of Summerville, along with Fernandes, means that West Ham should have money to spend to bring him in from Ipswich.

Given his track record at this level, he would no doubt be a positive addition to the Hammers’ squad to help their bid for promotion.

While he didn’t quite put up the same level of goals and assists as Summerville in their respective Championship successes, the Dutchman was working with a stronger group of attacking talent, and he was solidified as the starter under Daniel Farke at Elland Road.
