West Ham suffered a fresh blow when Jean-Clair Todibo withdrew in the warm-up at Villa Park before a 2-0 defeat. The result kept Nuno Espirito Santo’s side 18th, four points behind 15th-placed Leeds, who drew 0-0 with Brentford.

John McGinn scored before half-time and Ollie Watkins added another after it.

Todibo, a £33m signing last summer, had been due to start in a back three with Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos. After pointing to his calf during a passing drill, he consulted medical staff, then midfielder Freddie Potts came in as a late switch to a back four.

“It is not good to go into the international break with this feeling. It is realising that we must do better. We have a lot of work to do. We didn’t play good, we have to react, do things better, and we are in the fight.” He told Sky Sports.

“It is a moment to reflect and realise we have to do much better. I think the fans today felt disappointed with us, and that is what hurts the most.”

If the 26-year-old does have a calf issue, he could miss Leeds’ FA Cup quarter-final at the London Stadium in two weeks. Crysencio Summerville is also out with a calf problem, having missed West Ham’s last two games and a first Netherlands call-up. Espirito Santo’s men have lost only two of seven in the league and now have a fortnight before facing Leeds, then another week before Wolves at home.
