Cancellieri came through the Lazio system, took loan detours through Empoli and Parma, and can slot in out wide or drift centrally as an emergency striker. Yet his career record in Italy’s top flight stands at 12 goals and five assists from 125 games.

That is simply not the profile of a player who turns games on their head. Four goals in 30 league outings last term is okay for a rotation option, but West Ham cannot afford to spend time nursing a development project. They need immediate impact. They need players who can bully defenders on a Tuesday night away in Stoke.

Financially, paying £5 million to £6 million for a player in the last year of his contract is less risky. Lazio will want to avoid losing him for nothing in 12 months, giving the Hammers decent leverage at the negotiating table. Low risk does not equal good strategy.
