The Albion duo have reacted on social media after Karlan Grant’s exit from The Hawthorns was confirmed.

Karlan Grant has brought his six-year stay at West Brom to an end.

The 28-year-old, who signed for the Baggies in the summer of 2020 for a reported fee of £15m from Huddersfield Town, has departed The Hawthorns on a free transfer, linking back up with former employers Charlton Athletic, a place where Grant broke through the academy system and made a name for himself at the beginning of his career.

From West Brom’s perspective, Grant was certainly a polarising figure during such a long stay in the Black Country, flip-flopping from being a prominent player to being a severe first-team outcast over those six seasons.

Grant’s major highlight with Albion will have been in his second season for the club, where he returned to the Championship following relegation from the Premier League and netted 18 goals in the second tier, registering himself as the club’s top scorer for the 2021-22 campaign.

After his move to The Valley was confirmed, Grant took to Instagram to issue his exit message to his Baggies colleagues and supporters, admitting while there had been ‘highs and lows’ during his West Brom stint, he was ‘grateful for every moment’.

On Instagram, Grant wrote: “After 6 years it’s time for me to say goodbye to @wba. There have been plenty of highs and lows along the way, but I am grateful for every moment and proud to have represented this club. The experiences, memories & people I have met during my time here will stay with me forever.

“A special thankyou to all the fans for your support throughout my journey. Your passion & support never goes unnoticed and i will always be grateful for that. I wish everyone at @wba nothing but success and all the very best for the future!

“Thankyou baggies💙.”

Following Karlan Grant’s exit message on Instagram, many of his ex-colleagues flooded into the comments section to wish him well for the future, as he embarks on a fresh challenge back at Charlton Athletic.

Mowatt joined the Baggies during Grant’s second but first full season at The Hawthorns and has had similar experiences to Grant during his Albion spell, with both being loaned out at points during their stints after falling out of favour in the first-team picture, with Grant temporarily joining Cardiff City while Mowatt linked up with Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Price has managed to share the pitch with Grant many times during his time donning the famous blue and white stripes, with the Northern Ireland international building a relationship with the wideman, and on occasions combining to terrific effect in the final third.

In the Instagram comments, Mowatt replied: “What a guy all the best brother.”

Price similarly responded: “All the best brother❤️.”

Other ex-Albion stars to respond were Daryl Dike, Jamal Jimoh-Aloba and Darnell Furlong, while current Baggies first-team asset Ousmane Diakite also wished Grant all the best on his new move.

West Brom must push on after Karlan Grant exit confirmed

While there will be some disappointment to see Karlan Grant’s long-standing association with West Brom come to an end, you can’t help but feel it is the right decision, with Grant no longer the Championship marksman he once was when originally brought to the club.

Ever since his 18-goal tally under Steve Bruce, Grant failed to reach double figures for goals again over the next four seasons and did receive criticism from sections of the Albion faithful in the process for his lack of work rate.

That did immensely improve after returning from his loan spell at Cardiff City under Carlos Corberan, but underwhelming displays would follow after the Spaniard’s exit, with the former Huddersfield Town man not doing enough to justify earning new terms.

Now he’s gone, Albion are in desperate need of filling the void and securing some new wingers, something boss James Morrison has admitted the Baggies need to address.

Albion currently only have one recognised winger in the form of Mikey Johnston, who himself is working his way back from an ankle fracture sustained at the back end of last season, while Isaac Price can fill in on the opposite flank, but is better used centrally.

If Morrison is to carry on with his 4-4-2 setup that worked wonders during his interim spell, then the Baggies will have to bring in wingers who have bags of pace and trickery, while possessing the nous to deliver quality balls into the box that can help give Albion enough ammunition to be in the promotion mix.

With just over three weeks away until their Carabao Cup meeting with Rotherham United, Albion must ramp up their transfer plans and address their winger crisis, with transfer talk around The Hawthorns worryingly quietening down after such a fast-paced start.
