If Marseille are barred from the Europa League over finances, their slot would pass down the Ligue 1 table, with Monaco and Strasbourg poised to profit. According to L'Équipe, the prospect of exclusion is being closely watched by clubs that finished just behind OM.
In 2022 OM signed a settlement with UEFA committing to return to balance under financial fair play, limiting the deficit to 60 million euros across three seasons, with at least 55 million euros covered by the shareholder. The club has apparently not done so.
If Marseille fail to convince that the French TV rights crisis heavily hit their accounts, or if UEFA experts refuse to weigh that factor, the club could face sanctions up to a one-season exclusion. The regulations state that a club not admitted is replaced by the next best-placed side from the same association, provided eligibility criteria are met and the competition format permits, with the association's access adjusted.
That would see Rennes, sixth, take OM's place. As Rennes are already directly qualified for the Europa League, Monaco, seventh, would move from the Europa Conference League play-offs to the Europa League league phase.
Strasbourg, eighth, would then gain a route into the Conference League play-offs. All changes would depend on every club meeting UEFA financial rules, and Marseille's case is before UEFA's club financial control body on Tuesday, with no decision expected before the end of the week.
