Club América picked up its first win of 2026, beating Necaxa 2-0. But two big announcements made moments after the final whistle left everyone surprised and confused.
André Jardine’s lineup to face Los Rayos missed key players. Álvaro Fidalgo sat up in the stands, whilst Allan Saint-Maximim decided to sit out, following some disturbing off-pitch actions which have had an impact on him and his family.
The game was won with a thunderous strike from Brían Rodríguez (left) and Victor Davíla’s close range finish, but it was the full-time announcements which were on the lips of fans.
By half-time, supporters had already spotted Fidalgo in the stands. He waved back, visibly emotional, as his name echoed around the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, a fitting tribute to a player who played a key role in Las Águilas’ historic tri-championship run between 2023 and 2024.
After five years with the club, it was confirmed that the player (pictured right in 2024) had agreed to a move back to his native Spain, with América accepting a $2.3M million bid from Real Betis.
Within seconds of the Fidalgo news breaking, Club América released another shock as they broke the news that winger Allan Saint-Maximim would also depart the club.
Unlike Fidalgo, the news surrounding Allan Saint-Maximim unravels a much darker story as the French winger highlighted that his children were on the receiving end of racist abuse in Mexico City.
In an Instagram post talking on the subject, Saint-Maximim stated:
So to those of who dared to mess with my kids, I’m telling you: you made a mistake.
Whilst no formal decision was made at the time of the Instagram post, the former Newcastle United’s future remained unclear: what would he do next?
Three days later, the answer would be announced: Allan Saint-Maximim leaves Club América. 16 appearances, three goals and two assists, the 28-year-old is ready for his next challenge. One that he hopes has a better outcome for him and his family.
Off the pitch, the situation paints a dark image of Mexico City. After Pumas’ Aaron Ramsey decided to leave the club following the disappearance of his dog, Luna, Saint-Maximim becomes the second high-profile player to leave the league prematurely, after so much hope and expectation was placed on his shoulders when joining the club in August 2025.
What does this mean for Club América? Unless they can dip into the free market, finding replacements for two key players will become difficult. The transfer window officially closes this week, and time is running out for Jardine to bolster his squad to rival for the 2026 Liga MX Clausura.
