Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United has been a hot topic of discussion during the summer transfer window.
Newcastle continue to insist the highly-rated striker is not for sale this summer.
But the Sweden international has communicated his desire to leave St James’ Park and has reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool.
Newcastle are ready to offer Isak a lucrative new deal which would comfortably make him the club’s best-paid player.
But he is not interested in staying and wants to join the Reds to compete for the highest honours.
According to The Athletic, Isak’s contract renewal talks began several months before Amanda Steveley left the club last July, and he was happy to stay at that point.
But Newcastle postponed the contract talks as their main focus was on compliance with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
Having assessed the club’s cost base, former sporting director Paul Mitchell did not believe they had the PSR capacity to extend the Swedish footballer’s deal.
The club’s financial situation has since significantly improved after they qualified for the Champions League and sold Miguel Almiron, Lloyd Kelly and Sean Longstaff.
They are now in a position to offer Isak a very lucrative contract, but the player is not interested and wants to join Liverpool.
