Wolves are braced for a fraught January as they try to fix a dire start, with only two points on the board and 16 adrift of safety, a situation that complicates recruitment.

Quotidiano Sportivo reports that Wolves are among the clubs keen on Union Berlin centre-back Diogo Leite, whose contract expires at the end of the season, raising the prospect of a cut-price move next month. Bologna are pushing to sign him, and they may be joined in the race by Wolves, Girona, Fiorentina, AC Milan and Fenerbahce.

The report adds that Leite may not be keen on Wolves, preferring a club in a stronger position. He was linked with Wolves earlier in the season.

Wolves plan to reinforce widely in January, with a goalkeeper, right wing-back, midfielder, winger, number 10 and striker on the list. They want Premier League knowhow and players seeking minutes before the World Cup, although the relegation threat could limit what they can attract.

Centre-back is not the most urgent area, with bigger gaps in creativity and ruthlessness for Rob Edwards to address. A playmaker and a quick, ball-carrying forward should be the focus. Matt Jackson and his team may face similar reluctance from targets throughout the window.
