Wout Faes has returned to Leicester City after AS Monaco opted against a permanent deal as his loan expired on 30 June.

The club said in a statement that his loan had ended and they thanked him for his commitment and professionalism.

The centre-back joined in January and started 15 of his 16 appearances. With Conference League football and a revenue drop, the €7.5m, around £6.5m, option was not taken.

Sections of Monaco’s support welcomed his exit, and many in England are far from enthused about his return.

His four years at City have been turbulent. Signed from Reims after Wesley Fofana’s departure, his debut came in a backline that shipped six at Tottenham. He improved in the Championship under Enzo Maresca before another relegation further harmed his standing.

A fractious relationship with supporters was underlined at Sheffield Wednesday, where he scored late after coming on and cupped his ear to the Kop amid boos. The celebration turned more fans against him.

Monaco initially surged after his arrival, winning seven straight in February, then they began conceding freely. Between 10 April and 17 May he featured in five Ligue 1 games with 14 goals shipped, including a 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg on the final day.

Fenerbahce of Türkiye have reportedly enquired about the Belgian defender. His Leicester contract runs to next June, so a sale or even a loan could make sense if terms are right. City face a League One rebuild with movement expected in the window.
