Xabi Alonso has broken his silence on Chelsea’s failed move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, with the pursuit now over.

Sunderland Echo reports that Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international, who was understood to be attracted by the chance to work with Alonso again after their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland held firm throughout, insisting Xhaka was not for sale and rejecting attempts to negotiate. The Black Cats only signed him from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17million, and view him as central to Régis Le Bris’ plans ahead of the club’s return to European competition.

Xhaka was initially open to discussions but reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland after talks. The opportunity to captain the club in Europe, and its longer-term ambitions, were significant factors in that stance.

Asked about the situation, Alonso said: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” Sunderland consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
