Xabi Alonso has called Chelsea a ‘beautiful project’ and has said he is excited to get to work at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso has been appointed Chelsea manager on a four-year deal and will officially begin his reign in West London in July.
The 44-year-old arrives having managed Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid in his career to date, leading the former to a first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season.
He will arrive at Chelsea as a replacement for Liam Rosenior, tasked with reviving the club’s fortunes after a difficult campaign.
Speaking to El Chiringuito TV, Alonso said he is relishing the challenge. Asked what attracted him to Chelsea, he said: “It’s a beautiful project. I’m excited and ready to get to work.”
Alonso will arrive in London with uncertainty surrounding several key names. Chelsea’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has seen a number of top talents linked with moves away.
Enzo Fernandez, Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella have all been linked with Spanish sides, but Alonso is confident Chelsea will build a side capable of challenging next season.
“We’re going to make a good team,” he added.
