Second draw against championship contenders

FK Austria Vienna 0-0 FC Red Bull Salzburg Women

Our RBS women are establishing themselves as Austria Vienna's nemesis, after meeting the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga leaders on equal terms in their second championship group encounter. Countless set pieces, a nervy goal-line incident, and 96 demanding minutes were all the brilliant Lara Ritter and her teammates had to overcome to become the first team this season to steal a point from the Viennese side to delay their title celebrations.

Match summary

Our were determined to put a spanner in the Violets' potential championship celebrations from the outset and defended with utmost concentration in the first 45 minutes. Austria's first noteworthy attacks came from Schöffel: first with a header – well wide – and then, after inheriting the ball due to defensive lapses, goalkeeper Lara Ritter was on hand to save. While Vina Crnoja, set up by Sara Grabovac, also forced the keeper at the other end Pal, into action, a perfect sliding tackle by Akrap, which stopped a Triendl run, brought the first half to a close.

Just over a week ago, our courageous defensive work – in the Austrian Women's Cup final – went unrewarded. Today, Dusan Pavlovic's team reaped the rewards! The undefeated league leaders repeatedly attacked in vain to secure the win they desperately wanted, and our team skillfully defended all their set pieces. Schiechtl, Weilharter, Uka, Strode – they all despaired against our determined side. The referee then waved play on after a scramble at the near post reminiscent of 1966 – goalkeeper Ritter was likely alert enough to react in time anyway.

With Lucia Orkic and Valentina Illinger clearing the ball off the line and Ritter making two further, almost miraculous, saves against Schiechtl and Schöffel, it was clear shortly afterwards - we were the first away team this season to earn a point at Austria Vienna!

It was a a well-deserved point! We played really good football in the first half, and we were incredibly strong on the ball – that's how we controlled the game. In the second half, we defended a few dangerous situations very well. Of course, we knew about Austria's strength at set pieces - we experienced that in the cup final. I'm extremely pleased with the energy and clarity our team brought to the pitch. We knew exactly what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it in every situation, every minute – and it worked perfectly. I'm very proud of the girls again, and also that we're the first away team to get a point at Austria!
