Greuther Fürth will start the final matchday of the 2. Bundesliga season in an automatic relegation spot after a 2-1 defeat to Hertha BSC. Sensational goals from Kennet Eichhorn and Michael Cuisance gave the three points for the ten-man hosts.
Hertha played an hour with ten after Josip Brekalo fouled Branimir Hrgota, who will leave the club at the end of the season, as a last defender to prevent a counterattacking move. However, they found the first two goals of the game after the break.
First, the 16-year-old highly-rated midfielder scored his first 2. Bundesliga goal on his return from suspension. Eichhorn is heavily linked with Bayern as one of the options to replace Leon Goretzka, and the second goal came from someone who actually had a spell at the Rekordmeister.
Cuisance scored his third goal of the season with a thunderous shot from outside the box five minutes before time. A couple of minutes before the end of regular time, Fürth reduced the deficit from an expected source.
Sayfallah Ltaief’s excellent delivery was converted by Noel Futkeu as the future Eintracht Frankfurt striker headed home the goal that put him at the top of the scoring chart. Including each of Fürth’s last seven goals, the 23-year-old netted 18 times in a difficult campaign for the club.
He’ll hope next week’s game against Fortuna Düsseldorf will not be his last for the club as Fürth still have the chance to finish in the relegation playoff spot. While there is a three-point gap from Eintracht Braunschweig and Düsseldorf, Heiko Vogel’s side only trail 16th-placed Arminia Bielefeld by a single point.
Hertha climbed to sixth place after Stefan Leitl’s men ended the capital club’s four-game winless run. Leitl could still do a favor for his former club as they face Bielefeld next Sunday.
