Everton have been ordered to pay Burnley £40m in compensation, and those funds could help the Championship club retain Zian Flemming.
Burnley are set for a huge rebuilding period as they look to bring in a new head coach before starting to seriously plan for life in the Championship.
Of course, work will be going on in the background over potential deals, but you would imagine that the next boss will have a say in who arrives and departs in the window.
Like all relegated clubs, Burnley will have a financial advantage over the majority of the league, and many will expect them to be in the mix for automatic promotion once again in 12 months time.
However, a consequence of relegation is a substantial drop in revenue, and whilst the Clarets will be big spenders, it’s clear that some high-profile sales are required.
Yet, Burnley may be in a stronger financial position than they had previously thought, as it has been reported that they have won a landmark legal case against Everton, who have been ordered to pay the Championship side nearly £40m.

It should be said that the Toffees are challenging the verdict, but Burnley clearly have a strong case, and that is a sum of money that would change the outlook at Turf Moor.
Certain players would still have to leave, but it could enable Burnley to keep at least one of their key men, and, if possible, retaining Zian Flemming must be a priority.
Obviously, if Flemming wants to go, it will be difficult to keep him, and many would argue it’s counter-productive to try and convince someone to stay who doesn’t want to be at the club.
But, the Dutchman doesn’t come across as a player who will force a move, and keeping him at Turf Moor would be a major statement of intent.
With Jarrod Bowen looking more likely to stay at West Ham, and Wolves keeping Andre, as well as adding Raul Jimenez, both of Burnley’s promotion rivals have made positive early moves.
So, the Clarets must try to follow suit, and whilst there are several good players at the club, there’s no doubt that Flemming is a hugely influential figure at the club.
A return of 11 goals in the Premier League was outstanding by Flemming, particularly when you take into account how poor Burnley were overall.

Furthermore, the ex-Millwall man scored all types of goals. He is a brave forward who attacks the ball with his head, he has an ability to find space in the box, and two goals against Wolves stand out as brilliant individual efforts.
It also helps that Flemming is proven in the Championship. He has hit double figures with the Lions and Burnley in the past, which includes helping Scott Parker’s side to promotion in 2024/25.
But, it does feel as though he has taken his game up a level in the past 12 months, and Flemming has managed to firmly establish himself as the main man at the club.
That will have only increased his confidence, and whoever does take charge at Burnley will have recognised from watching the team that Flemming is a key figure.
We know that money talks, and Flemming, like every player, will have a valuation, but Burnley must make it a number that reflects his ability and their situation.
With three years to go on his contract, the club are under no pressure to sell, and the windfall from Everton has increased the Clarets’ budget.
Again, some sales are inevitable, and it would be no surprise if Maxime Esteve and Quilindschy Hartman are among those to move on.
But, the £40m compensation from Everton will have an impact on Burnley, and if they manage to keep Flemming because of the payment, it could have a transformative impact on the club going into the new season.
