Few players in the Championship have risen through the ranks quite like Hayden Hackney at Middlesbrough under the tutelage of the likes of Michael Carrick and Kim Hellberg.

The academy graduate has transformed from a promising youngster into the heartbeat of Boro’s midfield, producing a series of standout performances that have elevated both his reputation and importance to the club over a number of seasons at The Riverside, having been entrusted with responsibility on the ball by Michael Carrick.

Much like the underrated England international, Hackney has the ability to control games. Hackney’s composure on the ball, ability to dictate the rhythm of the team, and knack for influencing matches have made him one of the most admired midfielders in the division with Middlesbrough.

Memorable displays against some of the Championship’s biggest sides have only strengthened the growing belief that he is among the league’s very best talents, but also increased transfer interest in the 23-year-old, who has become the club's talisman.

Hayden Hackney's reasons for staying at Middlesbrough

Now wearing the captain’s armband at the Riverside, he embodies everything supporters want from a homegrown star — leadership, consistency, and a genuine connection to the club. With interest from elsewhere inevitable, Hackney’s rise from academy prospect to arguably the Championship’s standout player has become one of Middlesbrough’s most compelling modern stories.

However, retaining him could be contingent on promotion. It could also be something they face this summer, even if they are promoted. Jobe Bellingham left Sunderland in similar circumstances and transfer interest has mounted for some time now in Hackney.

With his future potentially in the balance this summer, we have looked at eight distinct reasons for Hackney to remain a Middlesbrough player into September 2026, irrespective of the division Hellberg's side find themselves in at that time.

Building a lasting legacy at his boyhood club

As a Middlesbrough academy graduate, Hackney has a rare opportunity to cement himself as one of the club’s modern greats in the coming seasons. Staying another season would strengthen that bond with supporters and allow him to continue shaping his legacy at Middlesbrough rather than becoming just another promising talent who moved on too early.

Hackney broke through in a meaningful capacity in 2022/23, despite making three appearances for Boro prior to that. Next year would, therefore, be his fifth season at the level. Despite being too good for another year of that, the Redcar native's loyalty could cement a lasting legacy which is spoken about for generations to come.

Leadership and captaincy responsibilities

Hackney has increasingly become a leader within the squad and, at times in previous seasons, has worn the armband. Following Jonny Howson's exit and with Dael Fry often injured, Hackney's role has grown and he has taken the armband more than anyone else in 2025/26 so far.

Those intangibles have grown as he has developed as both a player and a person. Remaining at Middlesbrough gives him the chance to further establish himself as a dressing-room figurehead. At a new club, particularly a bigger one, he may simply become another squad player rather than a central leadership presence in a team either fighting to survive relegation or for yet another promotion push.

Perfect stylistic fit under Kim Hellberg

Much like the system under Carrick, the progressive, possession-heavy style implemented by Hellberg suits Hackney’s technical midfield profile perfectly. His ability to dictate tempo, recycle possession, and progress the ball makes him fundamental to the system. He is the heartbeat of the current team.

Staying another year would allow him to further thrive in a tactical structure designed to maximise his strengths. Joining another club might mean a rotational role or being outshone by superior players, or it could be a relegation battle without much possession and Hackney then relying on his out of possession abilities more. That are is not where he shines and Hellberg's style of play in either league could be preferred.

Guaranteed minutes and importance

Few clubs could offer the upgrade in terms of minutes and importance that Hackney currently has. Not many will trust him with the same level of responsibility he currently enjoys, both on and off the pitch. He is the club's talismanic captain and he is arguably the club's most important asset.

In footballing terms at Middlesbrough, he is a guaranteed starter and a focal point in midfield. A summer move could easily result in rotational minutes while adapting to a new system, something that might slow the momentum of his development. At his age, and with potential ambitions of a sustained Premier League career and one for England, Hackney needs to start regularly.

A genuine promotion project to lead

Regardless of whether Middlesbrough go up this season or remain in the Championship, the club are totally geared toward promotion for another season. Should they fail to go up again this season, Hackney could be the central figure in that journey again in 2027. He has been with the club since the age of nine in 2011, and he could remain to see the project through.

Be it this season or next, leading Boro back to the Premier League would enhance his reputation far more than joining an already established top-flight side. That level of loyalty to a project would be impressive for other suitors in the long-term too.

Continued development without pressure overload

At this stage of his career, Hackney benefits from being in an environment that trusts him but doesn’t overwhelm him with expectation. Middlesbrough provide the ideal platform for growth. Although there are expectations at second tier level and the expectancy is for them to always compete for the top flight, it is not the same pressure as there is at some of the clubs linked with him

Many of the English clubs vying for his signature are competing in Europe or are, respectfully, much bigger clubs historically than Boro. Moving to a bigger club could, in theory, bring intense scrutiny and competition that might hinder rather than accelerate his progress. That is another consideration when stepping up and not all players can make the transition.

Strong connection with supporters

Supporters naturally gravitate towards players who are 'one of their own'. By that, we mean academy products who represent the club’s identity as embodiments of the fans on the field. Hackney absolutely embodies that connection at The Riverside. By staying, he can further strengthen his relationship with the fanbase.

He could remain a symbol of Middlesbrough’s pathway from academy to first-team and continue to build more in the community of Middlesbrough as a whole. Leaving could damage his reputation among fans, even if many would feel they have to begrudingly accept his move to the Premier League if promotion is missed out on again in 2026.

His market value could rise even further

Many of the reasons given pertain to Hackney or the fans directly, but the other angle is that of the club and their perspective. Another strong campaign in either the Championship or the Premier League would only increase Hackney’s value and attract even greater interest a year on.

Protecting your asset or selling at the opportune moment are skills which are underrated and overlooked. However, if he continues to dominate games in midfield and potentially leads Middlesbrough into promotion contention or keeps them in the top flight, he could command a significantly bigger move in the future while leaving the club in a stronger position financially.

The transfer interest in Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney

Leeds United are eyeing the Boro ace, with Daniel Farke's side keen on Hackney and hoping to sign him if they remain in the Premier League and Middlesbrough fail to gain promotion. They retained him to give themselves more of a chance of promotion this season.

That's also true of more recent events, too, with Nottingham Forest having late January interest in Hackney, with Everton also linked to the Boro midfielder in the winter transfer window. Hellberg's side stood firm ahead of the business end of the 2025/26 season.

Portuguese giants FC Porto have had Hackney interest previously but serious interest from the Premier League has been a constant in recent years, even before Hellberg got the best out of him in the current system.

Aston Villa, Spurs, and Man United have all been credited with interest in Hackney, with the latter potentially seeing him reunite with Carrick. Our exclusive also revealed that Crystal Palace have tracked the Middlesbrough midfielder as well. The interest has been across much of the Premier League but even in Boro's current division as well.

One of Boro's promotion rivals, Ipswich Town, made an attempt to bring in Hackney during the summer transfer window but both Ipswich and Wolves failed late in the window to bring him in and he has scored or assisted 13 goals in 40 games since they chose to keep him. A few more of those and Boro
