It does seem that Arsenal are doing all they can to keep Manchester City in this season’s Premier League title race. A nervous Arsenal side was beaten 2-1 by Bournemouth yesterday at the Emirates Stadium. That result has given Pep Guardiola’s side an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table to six points if City can beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today. Manchester City will still have a game in hand on Arsenal after this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, and they do face Mikel Arteta’s side at the Etihad Stadium next weekend in what looms as a critical top-of-the-table clash. But for City to pile the pressure onto Mikel Arteta’s side, they must seize the massive opportunity on offer to them against Chelsea after Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth.
Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Bournemouth has given Pep Guardiola an opportunity to put Mikel Arteta’s stuttering side under real pressure in the title race. Arsenal do look like a side that is feeling the heat as the 2025/26 season reaches boiling point. There is a nervousness to their play, and they look every bit a side that doesn’t know how to close the deal in terms of winning the Premier League.
Having said that, Arsenal’s loss yesterday doesn’t mean a lot if Manchester City cannot pick up all three points against Chelsea today. Pep Guardiola’s will not want to slip-up themselves and drop points against Liam Rosenior’s side. The only way that City will pile the pressure onto Arsenal is if they win at Stamford Bridge. It doesn’t really matter how City win today. As long as they do. A win for Pep Guardiola’s side will see them seize the opportunity that Arsenal have put in front of them. Manchester City teams of years gone by would seize on such an opportunity. It remains to be seen if this City side can do so. However, they are on good form ahead of today’s match.
Manchester City swept Arsenal and Liverpool aside in their past two matches. City’s Carabao Cup final and FA Cup quarter-final wins saw Pep Guardiola’s side resemble a Pep Guardiola side for perhaps the first time this season, especially when you consider the level of the opponent and the stage that both wins came on. Both wins did resemble what City would do at their peak. They’d typically click into gear when the stakes were at their highest. That was a bedrock of Manchester City’s six Premier League title wins in seven years. This new-look City side has provided a glimpse that they may be about to do similar.
Pep Guardiola will be hoping his team continues their impressive form against Chelsea today. If they can, they stand every chance of picking up three points at Stamford Bridge. If Pep Guardiola’s side continues their strong recent form, it will also pile pressure onto Arsenal. In fact, any City victory will do that. But if City continue from where they left off against Arsenal and Chelsea, they’ll send a strong message to Arsenal ahead of next weekend’s match.
Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth yesterday has given Manchester City a real opportunity to pile the pressure onto Mikel Arteta’s side. It is an opportunity that City must take. If, come the final whistle against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today, Pep Guardiola’s side has picked three points they’ll have real momentum in which to hit the final stages of this season with. Grabbing the momentum in the title race could be crucial and City could seize it with a victory over Chelsea.
