Manchester City have been linked with a host of players ahead of the summer transfer window opening. One of those is Aston Villa’s powerful goal-scoring midfielder Morgan Rogers. Graeme Bailey has previously reported for TeamTalk that City are among a host of clubs interested in signing the England international this summer. Initially, it was hard to see where Rogers would fit into this City squad.

However, that was looking at where Rogers would fit into a Pep Guardiola side. Manchester City are not managed by Guardiola anymore. A new era is underway at City, and Morgan Rogers may be the player the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders need for what lies ahead.

To back up Graeme Bailey’s report, The Athletic has reported that Manchester City is among a host of clubs interested in signing Morgan Rogers, who is expected to leave Aston Villa this summer. The Athletic reports that Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and PSG all admire Rogers, meaning interest is high in signing the 23-year-old goal-scoring attacking midfielder. Rogers has starred for Aston Villa in recent season. He also figures to be a key player for England at the upcoming World Cup. Lastly, it is reported by The Athletic that if Villa do sell Rogers, they could command up to, or over, £100 million to part ways with him.

Morgan Rogers could fit into the new era at City.

Manchester City is set to embark on a new era, one where Pep Guardiola isn’t manager. Typically, viewing players that City were linked with, they’d be viewed through the prism of where they’d fit into Pep Guardiola’s City side. However, that has changed. It is expected that Enzo Maresca will be Manchester City’s next manager. While his philosophy is similar to Guardiola’s, Maresca will have his own view on potential signings and players he wants to add to City’s squad.

Manchester City will likely be in the market for a winger. They may also be in the market for a player who can play in midfield and drift forward, especially if Savinho and Tijjani Reijnders leave the club this summer. Morgan Rogers could fill both roles. Rogers is at his best as a goal-scoring midfielder; however, he can do that from the left wing, drifting centrally. Rogers isn’t the prototypical City signing from years gone by.

Morgan Rogers is a powerful attacking midfielder with the ability to drive at opponents from midfield when in possession. Maybe that is a player Enzo Maresca would like added to his squad. While Cherki and Foden are expected to be Manchester City’s number tens next season, there is merit to the idea of having a third option for the role. Also, Rogers could play out wide with Cherki and Foden as attacking midfielders, which would give Manchester City another attacking option. It is food for thought if nothing else.

Final thoughts.

Manchester City have once again been named as a club that is monitoring Morgan Rogers. If Rogers does leave Aston Villa this summer, they could move for him. Initially, it was hard to see where Rogers would fit into the City squad. However, with a new era underway at the club, perhaps the City hierarchy could see a role for Rogers, especially given his age and game-breaking ability, which is different from what other players Manchester City already have.
