Abel Ferreira reached 2,000 days in charge of Palmeiras on Saturday, underscoring one of Brazil’s most enduring coaching spells. According to Globo.com, he is the longest-serving coach at a Brazilian club since the points-based Brasileiro began in 2003.

He once joked to his wife Ana Xavier that he might last three months, yet his tenure now ranks among the country’s longest, with only four coaches in Brazilian history staying longer at one club.

Ferreira has won 11 trophies, four Paulistas, two Libertadores, two Brasileiros, a Copa do Brasil, a Recopa Sul-Americana and a Supercopa. He is Palmeiras’ most decorated head coach, surpassing Oswaldo Brandão, and has reached 13 finals.

His marks include club highs for Libertadores games and wins, 64 and 42, Brasileiro victories, 109, and appearances at Palestra Itália or Allianz Parque, 163. He has also overseen 423 matches in total.

After the 2024 Paulista, he went close to two years without silverware before lifting the State crown early in 2026. He has said Leila Pereira offered a renewal the day after a Copa do Brasil loss to Corinthians, which he called rare.

Among current Série A clubs, Flamengo collected 12 titles with 10 different managers, while Corinthians, São Paulo and Santos have had 11, eight and 15 coaches. This Série A has already seen 10 dismissals.

Contracted until the end of 2027, Palmeiras lead their Libertadores group and the Brasileirão on 29 points, and beat Jacuipense 3-0 in the cup. They visit Bragantino on Sunday at 18:30 Brasília time in round 13, with Ferreira suspended by the STJD for this and the next two league matches.
