Manchester United have shifted their transfer focus toward Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton (21), who has reportedly moved ahead of Brighton’s Carlos Baleba on the club’s shortlist for next summer, according to Sky Sports.
United manager Ruben Amorim has made the acquisition of a central midfielder a priority for 2025, with long-standing interest in Baleba well documented. However, sources suggest concerns have emerged over the 21-year-old’s development following a disappointing start to the season. The Cameroon international has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the Premier League this term, prompting questions over his form and consistency.
In contrast, Wharton has continued to excel at Selhurst Park, earning widespread praise for his composure, passing range, and tactical intelligence. Within Old Trafford circles, some reportedly view the England Under-21 international as the “next Michael Carrick,” a player capable of anchoring Amorim’s evolving midfield with both control and creativity.
Wharton, who signed a long-term deal with Palace until 2029, would not come cheaply, but his potential and Premier League experience make him an increasingly attractive target.
As United prepare for a summer of transition, Wharton’s emergence as a top priority signals a strategic pivot towards youth, intelligence, and long-term stability in midfield.
