TalkSport have reported that Brighton have no intention of selling Carlos Baleba in the January transfer window, delivering a setback to Manchester United’s hopes of midfield reinforcement. The 21-year-old, who joined from Lille last year, had been linked with a potential move to Old Trafford amid reports of dissatisfaction, but those claims have been firmly dismissed.

According to the report, “Brighton have no plans to cash in on United target Carlos Baleba this side of next summer.” Club sources have also suggested the midfielder remains settled and committed to his development under manager Fabian Hurzeler.
Baleba’s performances this season have fluctuated, with Hurzeler acknowledging that transfer speculation “has affected him slightly.” Despite that, Brighton’s hierarchy, led by Tony Bloom, believes the player’s potential remains immense. Bloom reportedly feels “it will not only be United in the hunt” once the club eventually decides to sell, with several top European sides tracking his progress.

United’s midfield search continues elsewhere, though with Palace’s Adam Wharton and Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham both viewed as complicated mid-season targets, options are narrowing for Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United’s need for a dynamic, press-resistant midfielder like Baleba has been apparent for months, and Brighton’s firm stance reinforces how far United have drifted in terms of recruitment power. Years ago, a player from Brighton might have viewed Old Trafford as a clear next step. Now, even mid-table Premier League clubs hold firm against United’s interest.
Baleba would have offered much-needed energy and athleticism to a stagnant midfield. Watching Brighton again showcase their negotiating strength only adds to the frustration. Tony Bloom’s track record means United will likely face a steep price next summer, with competition from continental clubs almost guaranteed.
Fans are growing tired of seeing names linked and deals fade away. The summer chase for Baleba may yet continue, but by then, United could be fighting a losing battle against better-prepared clubs. For many supporters, it feels like the same pattern repeating itself: hesitation, overcomplication and ultimately, disappointment.
