Having secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the Algerian national team now has just one goal in sight: to shine at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco. Fully aware of what’s at stake, Vladimir Petkovic and his staff have already begun meticulous preparations. Assistant coach Nabil Neghiz outlined the main aspects of their plan:
“We will travel to Morocco four days before our first match against Sudan,” he revealed,
emphasizing the importance of perfect acclimatization before plunging into the heart of the tournament.
A headache due to league stoppages
However, the Fennecs’ preparations face a major challenge: the early suspension of certain domestic leagues, especially in Tunisia and Qatar. This situation could affect the fitness levels of several key players. “It’s a real problem,” admitted Neghiz. To counter this risk, a specific training program will be implemented for Baghdad Bounedjah, Youcef Atal, Youcef Belaïli, and Mohamed Tougai, who will join the Sidi Moussa technical center ahead of AFCON to maintain their physical condition and match sharpness.
Meanwhile, the coaching staff is closely monitoring the performances of a large group of players. “The extended list includes 50 names. They are all important to us, and we are keeping a close eye on their performances,” explained Neghiz. This strategy will allow them to select the 23 or 26 players in the best form to represent the national colors.
With just over two months until kickoff, Algeria is moving forward with ambition and determination. Buoyed by a positive momentum and their historic World Cup qualification, the Greens know they have everything to play for in Morocco: redeeming themselves after the disappointment of the last two editions and reclaiming a continental title that has eluded them since 2019.
