FC Bayern’s championship celebrations on Munich’s Marienplatz were overshadowed by a provocative action by some 1860 fans. President Herbert Hainer has now reacted to the incident – and lashed out against the city rivals himself
While thousands of Bayern fans were celebrating the 35th German championship on Sunday, a large banner suddenly caused a stir in the middle of Marienplatz
At first glance, the banner looked like a classic Bayern crest, but on closer inspection it became clear that supporters of TSV 1860 Munich were behind the action. The XXL banner provocatively read: „FC Bauern Hurensöhne“ (FC farmers sons of bitches). The number „1860“ had also been written on the banner in black sharpie
Bayern President Herbert Hainer reacted to the action – and couldn’t resist taking a swipe at his city rivals. „Unfortunately, our fans can’t return the favour, because there won’t be any championships to celebrate at 1860 any time soon,“ Hainer told BILD with a slight smile
A clear broadside against the Lions: TSV 1860 have been playing in the 3rd division for nine years now and missed out on promotion again this season. After a 3-0 defeat at SC Verl, the Sechziger finished the season in eighth place
A particularly piquant fact: TSV 1860 Munich’s last championship was around 60 years ago. The Lions won their only Bundesliga title to date in 1965/66. Since then, FC Bayern has finally taken over the sporting supremacy in Munich – and has continuously expanded it
With the current title win, Bayern now have 35 German championships
The timing of the action attracted additional attention. The banner was carried through the middle of the celebrating crowd and was hardly noticed at first. It was only later that those responsible noticed the provocation
Stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann was apparently made aware of the banner by Manuel Neuer during the celebrations. Lehmann then tried to quickly defuse the situation. „Can you take down the tarpaulin for a moment, because you can’t see anything underneath it,“ he said over the loudspeakers
At that very moment, however, the banner was shown live on TV and in the official Bayern stream
Shortly afterwards, the tarpaulin was finally rolled up and removed.
