Following the German national team’s latest World Cup failure, Dietmar Hamann is calling for a radical fresh start. The TV analyst wouldn’t even spare captain Joshua Kimmich.

The surprising World Cup exit in the round of 32 against Paraguay has further fueled discussions about the future of the German national team. Now, former national team player Dietmar Hamann is also speaking out with clear demands.

The former Bayern pro is calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the roster—and is even questioning DFB captain Joshua Kimmich.

Hamann Calls for a Fresh Start Without Kimmich

In an interview with Sky, Hamann spoke out in favor of relying on a new generation going forward. “We should make a fresh start now,” the 52-year-old explained.

Among those he named as possible successors in central midfield were Angelo Stiller and Bayern talent Tom Bischof. “With Stiller and Bischof, who might be able to play there. We simply have to play the young guys now, because we’ve been watching this go on for too long.”

For Hamann, it’s clear that the DFB must make a clean break. “We really need to make a clean break. And if the players don’t step down on their own, then maybe we should suggest it to them.”

In addition to Kimmich, Hamann no longer sees Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka as part of the national team’s future.

Kimmich isn’t thinking about retiring

Joshua Kimmich himself had already made it clear after the World Cup exit that retiring was not an option for him. “I’ll always have the drive to give it another shot. What I’ll never do is give up,” the 31-year-old explained on MagentaTV.

The Bayern Munich player also took responsibility for the failure after the elimination and emphasized that the team alone was responsible for the disappointing performances.

One thing is clear: After the third consecutive disappointing World Cup, the debate over the national team’s future roster is likely to gain further momentum in the coming weeks.
