According to L'Équipe, Manuel Neuer has announced his international retirement at 40 after Germany’s World Cup exit to Paraguay.

Germany were knocked out in the round of 32 on Monday, drawing 1-1 then losing 4-3 on penalties. Neuer saved one spot-kick during the shootout.

He said it was extremely hard for his international story to end this way.

He had already stepped away after Euro 2024. Julian Nagelsmann later recalled him, naming him in a 26-man squad for the North American finals, a fifth World Cup after 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Neuer debuted for Germany in 2009 and earned 128 caps. He won the 2014 World Cup and was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
