Aguirre at Mallorca offers optimism for Valencia | OneFootball

Valencia under Meriton have churned through coaches, stability has rarely stuck. According to Superdeporte, they have appointed Javier Aguirre, a manager who steadied Mallorca, though what follows for him remains to be seen.

He inherited a side that had shipped 19 goals in the previous nine matches, more than two per game, 2.11 on average. The task was anything but simple, and he succeeded Luis García Plaza, who had delivered promotion and a solid top-flight campaign.

Aguirre won two of his first four, against Atlético de Madrid and Alavés. A four-match winless spell then left him on the brink, but six points from the final two rounds kept Mallorca up.

In 2022/23 the team was calmer and more settled, with a clear back five. The 2023/24 campaign also ended with good numbers. Mallorca reached the Copa del Rey final too, denied a bigger prize only on penalties.

Across 97 matches in charge, Aguirre ranked third for matches at Son Moix this century. Goyo Manzano leads on 191, with Vicente Moreno on 133.

Those 97 would make Aguirre the second longest-serving coach of the Meriton era at Valencia by matches. It underlines his longevity in Palma and how little continuity Valencia have had since Peter Lim arrived. Marcelino García Toral heads that list, while Rubén García has 78, Carlos Corberán 72 and Nuno 62.
