Successive home defeats piled the pressure on Albert Riera at Eintracht Frankfurt as the young coach is also dealing with off-the-pitch issues that he vehemently denied in a press conference. Jonathan Burkardt returned to the starting lineup, but Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a narrow defeat at Deutsche Bank Park to Hamburger SV.
“We're disappointed – both with the result and the performance,” said the Spaniard after the game. “It simply wasn't good enough. We lacked energy in the first half. In the second half, we shouldn't have stopped pushing forward, even when we were leading.
“We had chances to win the game, but we weren't efficient enough. We have to do better, and we have to play much better. We need the fans, and I completely agree with their reaction. But we stand together. Together we are stronger, and we will fight for the (remaining) six points.”
Midfielder Can Uzun also addressed the reaction of the fans after the final whistle. “I completely understand the fans. They come to the stadium wanting to see a good game. Unfortunately, they see a performance like this from us. It's not good enough. We have to do more. We, players, aren't delivering the performance we're capable of. That's why we're not winning,” said the player who scored the first goal of the match.
Freiburg can now go three points ahead of Riera’s men if they beat Wolfsburg tomorrow. Eintracht Frankfurt’s remaining games are against Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart.
