New Liverpool signing Alexander Isak scored his first goal for the club against Southampton in a 2-1 Carabao Cup win and says he feels fit.
Isak was the subject of transfer rumours all summer and wasn’t able to train much amidst the speculation and fallout linking him with a move away from Newcastle.
Since he has joined Liverpool he has been slowly phased in, the game against Southampton only his second start.
But he said it was good to get some minutes: “It was good to get minutes but it’s a competitive game so the main goal was to win and score goals. That’s my main priority, to help the team with my goals and my game. Was good to get some minutes on the way to getting fit.”
The Swede will likely be in line for more game time now following Hugo Ekitike’s dismissal against the Saints.
The Frenchman came on for Isak at half-time and scored in the 85th minute, but took his shirt off and received a second yellow card for the action – meaning he will miss the Premier League game against Crystal Palace this weekend as a result.
Isak, however, said he is ready to start: “I feel good and fit. It’s still early with a new club and teammates but I feel good. It’s a great team to be a part of and with all of the games it’s only going to get better.”
