The Swede had the Reds in front at half-time despite missing a chance to open the scoring with barely a minute played
Alexander Isak said he was happy to have scored his first Liverpool goal as the Reds edged Southampton out of the Carabao Cup.
After a lacklustre first half, Isak put the hosts in front on the stroke of half-time, firing home from Federico Chiesa’s cross.
Liverpool went on to win 2-1 after Southampton equalised in the second half, though Hugo Ekitike was shown a second yellow card for removing his shirt in celebrating his last-gasp winner.
Isak had a chance to open the scoring with barely a minute played, but was denied by a smart save from Alex McCarthy.
Speaking at full-time, Isak said he was disappointed not to have made it a brace: “The first chance, yeah, of course, should have been a goal.
“But it is always about being ready for the next one, which I was, so I am happy for that.
“I think it was good to get minutes, but of course it is a competitive game, so the main goal is to win and score a goal, so that is my main priority, to help the team with my goals and my game.
“It was good to get some more minutes on the way to getting fit.”
Isak made strong progress on his fitness on Tuesday night and was seen running sprints after being substituted off at half-time.
He continued, saying he had not expected the extra workout.
“Yeah, that was a new one,” he chuckled. “It was funny, a new experience, but you’ve got to get fit.
“I feel good. I feel fit. Obviously, it is still early. New club, new teammates.
“I feel good, it is a good team to be a part of. With all the games, it’ll only get better.”
Ekitike’s suspension could see him get his chance sooner than expected. He could return to action on Saturday, as Liverpool visit Crystal Palace.
