Claude Puel, in extremis, kept OGC Nice in Ligue 1 thanks to Friday night’s 4-1 win over AS Saint-Étienne. However, it is not expected that succeeding in his mission will get him the job on a permanent basis.
Puel succeeded Franck Haise back in December and presided over a protracted slide down the table, although he did get the club to the final of the Coupe de France. He was hired by returning co-presidents Jean-Pierre Rivere and Maurice Cohen. The former has confirmed his exit, the latter may too leave, although that depends on the situation regarding the club’s new buyers. An unnamed American consortium are in advanced talks, as per Nice-Matin.
Puel’s deal only ran until the end of the season and it is not expected to be extended. Two names have emerged as the club looks to appoint a new manager: Alexandre Dujeux and Didier Digard. The former has excelled at SCO Angers and Nice-Matin understands that he is the frontrunner. L’Équipe understands that Digard, who has previously had a stint as manager of the academy and who also had an interim spell, too, prior to Francesco Farioli’s arrival, is also in the running. He has succeeded in keeping Le Havre AC in the top flight on a shoestring budget.
