Northampton Town have officially entered a new era after Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) completed its takeover of the League Two club.

The investment group has acquired a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the company that owns the majority of shares in the club, following almost five months of negotiations and regulatory checks.

João Xavier and Tim Chamberlain will become co-chairmen, while former Brazil international Alexandre Pato is set to join the board as a director. Kelvin Thomas will step down as chairman after more than a decade in the role, although he will remain a shareholder and director alongside fellow co-owners David Bower and Nigel Le Quesne.

The takeover leaves Northampton debt-free, despite the club recording a pre-tax loss of almost £3m in April.

Pato, who retired from playing last year, is now an investor and board member at SAC. The former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil forward visited Sixfields in September and watched Northampton beat Newport County 1-0.

SAC had previously explored a takeover of Colchester United before turning its attention to Northampton. The group’s proposed acquisition was approved by the Independent Football Regulator and EFL earlier this month.

Northampton were relegated from League One last season and currently sit 22nd in League Two.
