‘Allez les Verts!’, the Saint-Étienne anthem lighting up Geoffroy-Guichard 50 years on | OneFootball

Composed in 1976 before Saint-Étienne’s European Cup final against Bayern Munich, which ended 0-1, Monty’s Allez les Verts! has long set Geoffroy-Guichard alight.

According to L'Équipe, the song, written by Monty to a Jean-Louis D'Onorio melody, soundtracks the players’ entrance on matchdays.

Its swaggering refrain about the Greens being the strongest has aged, with the club’s most recent French title dating to 1981, yet the chant remains a timeless staple at the stadium.

Philippe Gastal, curator of the Musée des Verts, noted that last season’s Ligue 2 home matches were sold out and that hearing 40,000 voices join in before the teams emerge still brings shivers.

Half a century after its creation, Allez les Verts! endures as Saint-Étienne’s signature soundtrack.
