Frank Lampard has been backed to become a future England boss following his great success with Coventry City.

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has attracted external admirers following his success with the Sky Blues.

The CBS Arena outfit displayed their impressive winning appetite by beating Wrexham last Sunday, even though they had already secured both automatic promotion and the Championship title.

Lampard's men sealed their place in next season's Premier League when they drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers on 17 April, and clinched silverware when they hammered Portsmouth 5-1 four days later.

Coventry are now tasked with readying their squad for the top flight, and must hope that their talented boss isn't tempted by a move away from the West Midlands.

England told why Frank Lampard would be a strong manager on the international stage

Lampard has endured a mixed managerial career before his success with the Sky Blues, as he struggled in the Premier League with Everton, and was also sacked by Chelsea in 2021.

The former England midfielder largely performed well during his spell in charge of Derby County, guiding the Rams to the Championship play-off final in 2019.

Having returned to the second tier to take the Coventry job in November 2024, the former Derby boss took the Sky Blues to the play-offs last season, before steering them towards this term's title-winning success.

The 47-year-old has been subject to speculation thanks to his recent triumph, and speaking to the Coventry Telegraph, Lampard hit out at links to the Chelsea job.

Chelsea will need to hire a permanent manager this summer, after sacking ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior and appointing Calum McFarlane on an interim basis.

Meanwhile, speaking live on talkSPORT on Tuesday, Ally McCoist discussed whether he'd like to see Lampard in charge of England: "I would love to see it. If it were to happen, it would be a good bit down the line.

"I think you look at somebody like Frank, and he has served and is more than serving an apprenticeship. Success at Derby. He’s in a position now, Frank, he’s sampled a little bit of everything.

"Success, disappointment. I think Thomas Tuchel is a terrific coach, different class as a manager. But I’m kind of old school, and I think in an ideal scenario, your national manager should be one of your own."

Frank Lampard still has a lot to prove before being considered for England job

As alluded to by McCoist, if Lampard does ever become England boss, it won't be for a long time, because Tuchel is currently contracted through to the 2028 European Championship.

However, if the Three Lions endure a poor World Cup campaign this summer, the German's position may be reviewed by the FA.

Lampard still has a lot to prove before being considered for the England post, though, as there is a significant gulf in class between the Championship and the latter stages of international competitions such as the World Cup and the Euros.

The Coventry boss must at least establish the Sky Blues as a strong Premier League outfit before he is deemed as someone who has the credentials for the most high-pressure footballing job in the country.

McCoist is right to point out that Lampard has already endured his fair share of both success and failure, though, which will certainly aid him as he vies to eventually climb the managerial ladder.
