Anthony Gordon’s long-awaited unveiling as a Barcelona player finally took place after a dramatic delay that stretched for more than seven hours beyond the originally scheduled time.
Despite growing speculation throughout the day, Barcelona remained confident that the transfer would be completed without any problems.
The delay was reportedly linked to the final legal details and paperwork involved in a deal of such importance, with all parties taking extra care before signing off on the agreement.
Once the formalities were completed, the English winger was officially presented and spoke publicly for the first time as a Barcelona player.
Although supporters were left waiting for most of the day, Gordon insisted he never had any concerns about the transfer being completed.
When asked whether the delay had made him nervous, the winger explained that he remained calm throughout the process.
“No, I’ve been very comfortable with my family and my agents at the hotel. I knew it was a done deal. I’m very excited about what’s happening.”
The former Newcastle United attacker also showed off his Spanish during the presentation, something that immediately impressed many supporters.
“It’s a dream come true to be part of the best team in the world,” he said in Spanish.
The 25-year-old revealed that once he discovered Barcelona were seriously interested, there was no need for further convincing.
“It’s a new Barça. I’ve always dreamed of playing for this team since I was a kid.
“I knew there were talks… but when I found out it was a real possibility, I didn’t hesitate. It’s a dream come true.”
Having arrived for a reported fee of €80 million, Gordon also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with representing one of football’s biggest clubs.
“It’s a challenge, and I’m very aware of this club’s history and the great players who have worn this jersey.”
One of the most interesting parts of Gordon’s first press conference involved his comments about Hansi Flick and the current Barcelona squad.
The winger revealed that he had already held conversations with the German coach before the move was finalised and spoke highly of the project being built at the club.
“I spoke with him over the last few days. If I was excited before, imagine how I feel now. He’s an incredible person and coach.
“I hope that together we can win many titles. It’s incredible what he’s achieved.”
Gordon also highlighted the quality he witnessed first-hand when facing Barcelona in the Champions League. In particular, he singled out Frenkie de Jong and Pedri for their influence.
“Playing with Lamine and the rest of the team is exciting. They’re top-tier players, the best in the world.
“I saw that when we played against them. Playing at St. James’ Park is tough because of the intense atmosphere, but Frenkie and Pedri outplayed us.”
His ambition was another major takeaway from the presentation.
Gordon revealed that he had spent years learning Spanish because he believed one day he would wear the Barcelona shirt.
“I wanted to speak Spanish because I wanted to play for Barça. Believe it or not. I’ve learned it over the last two years.
“I had a physical therapist at Newcastle, and I always told him that one day I’d play for Barça. I’ve only won one trophy with Newcastle, and I’m hungry to win. I want to win it all.”
The 25-year-old winger also spoke about his ambition of winning the Champions League with Barcelona in his debut season.
“It would be very special to win it with this club. I want the sixth title. I see the passion in the city. It would be incredible, especially in my first season.”
Lastly, when discussing his own game, Gordon pointed to one current Barcelona star as the player he most resembles.
“If I had to choose a style, it would be Raphinha’s—for his intensity, speed, and technical ability.
“Forward or winger? I want to help the team as much as possible. Score goals and provide assists, because that’s what wins games,” he concluded.
