Carlo Ancelotti has named Neymar in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, insisting the forward’s starting place is not guaranteed.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the Brazil coach said the recall followed recent fitness gains and sustained minutes for Santos.
He explained that staff assessments in March found Neymar had improved physically and played regularly, so he remains an important option for the tournament.
Ancelotti added that Neymar carries the same responsibilities as every other player, with training and matches to determine his role.
Experience also shaped selections, with the manager citing Everton of Grêmio as another call-up made for his know-how at this level.
Neymar returns after almost three years without an official Brazil appearance, his last in October 2023 against Uruguay when he suffered a serious left-knee injury.
He endured a long recovery and further muscle problems before rediscovering rhythm at Santos.
In his second stint back at the club, he has played 45 competitive games, scoring 18 and assisting nine. Since the last FIFA window he has logged the most minutes among the called-up Brazilian forwards.
Ancelotti expressed regret for players omitted, noting that several remain in Brazil’s plans, including Andrey Santos and João Pedro for the next cycle.
The squad will report on 27 May to Granja Comary in Teresópolis to begin preparations, and Neymar may still feature for Santos beforehand subject to fitness caution.
