Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup call-up on Monday in Rio has reopened Brazil’s goalkeeping debate, with Weverton emerging late in the frame. While Neymar draws the focus, the position is under scrutiny.
According to Globo.com, the Grêmio keeper is on Ancelotti’s 55-man provisional list and is viewed internally as a possible surprise, amid recent mistakes by Bento and Ederson and injuries to Alisson and John.
Hugo Souza is also on the provisional list and has already had chances under the Italian. Even so, Weverton’s experience as Brazil’s third keeper at the 2022 World Cup has put him back in contention.
In normal circumstances Alisson, Ederson and Bento have been Ancelotti’s most frequent picks, though the two seniors have been cut from squads in this period and require fitness monitoring. Alisson completes two months out on Monday with a thigh injury and is expected to be available for Liverpool against Brentford on Sunday, the final Premier League round.
Bento’s form has dipped. He erred in last Tuesday’s derby with Al Hilal, which could have handed Al Nassr the Saudi title, and also disappointed on Croatia’s goal in a friendly in the March international window. The staff are weighing up the final list.
Weverton started only the first match of the cycle in March 2023, a defeat to Morocco. He was then on the bench against Guinea and Senegal, and for qualifiers with Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Argentina. Ancelotti will name 26 players at 17:00 Brasília time on Monday in Rio, with the squad due to report on 27 at Granja Comary.
