On a visit to Sheffield on Friday 31 July, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged Gianni Infantino to resign, arguing the FIFA president is not the right person to lead the organisation after the unveiling of his plan to sell shares in the World Cup.
Pressure around Infantino has intensified. According to L'Équipe, Burnham renewed his call on Friday after reacting on X when the project was revealed on Tuesday.
Burnham, who is closely connected to football, said he was increasingly convinced the proposal was scandalous, and that its mere advancement showed, in his view, that Infantino is not the right figure to run FIFA.
Despite the backlash, the FIFA chief has kept his course. When told that UEFA would boycott the World Cup if shares were sold, the Prime Minister expressed surprise.
Infantino appears increasingly isolated, with CONCACAF and the AFC aligning with UEFA's stance. Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's former senior adviser, resigned on Friday morning.
