Another setback for Bayern! Sporting also turns down Palhinha

FC Bayern is determined to sell João Palhinha this summer. After Tottenham Hotspur backed out of a permanent deal, the next promising lead now appears to have fallen through as well. There is still hope, however.

João Palhinha remains one of FC Bayern’s top candidates for a transfer. The Portuguese national team player spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he impressed, particularly in the final stretch of the season.

At one point, it seemed quite realistic that he would stay in London. But now that the Spurs have signed two new midfielders—Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes—Palhinha apparently no longer plays a role in the Premier League club’s plans.

Sporting is also backing out

A new option seemed to open up recently with Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese champions were reportedly interested in bringing back their former star player.

However, as reported by the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the deal is unlikely to materialize. According to the report, Bayern Munich continues to demand a transfer fee of around 25 million euros—a sum that Sporting is currently unwilling to pay.

Given their own roster planning and financial constraints, the Portuguese club is said to have decided against a transfer.

However, Palhinha isn’t completely without suitors.

According to A Bola, Juventus Turin continues to be interested in the 30-year-old. The Italians are looking for a defensively strong midfielder and generally see the Bayern player as a good fit.

That said, the “Old Lady” actually prefers a younger player with more room to grow. However, since Juventus wants to finalize its plans as early as possible, Palhinha could become a serious alternative.

It remains to be seen whether concrete negotiations will actually take place. One thing is clear, though: After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Juventus, too, has only limited financial resources.

For FC Bayern, therefore, the decisive factor will likely be whether the club’s officials stick to their asking price or become more willing to compromise as the summer transfer window progresses.
