Anton Stach played phone tag with Julian Nagelsmann before finally learning of his Germany call-up, his wife screaming with joy in the background. The Leeds United midfielder described it as a special moment.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, it is his first involvement with the national set-up in four years. The 27-year-old dead-ball specialist has been named for friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana in the upcoming international window.

Nagelsmann had recently said Stach was doing well but was not exceptionally strong in the air or a top ball-winner, which cast doubt on selection. He noticed a missed call from a German number, called back without answer, then picked up on loudspeaker when it rang again. His wife and a friend overheard and celebrated.

He marked the news quietly, driving his friend to Leeds central station, grabbing shawarma in the city centre and enjoying the sun.

Team-mates congratulated him at Thorp Arch on Thursday as preparations continued for Saturday’s meeting with Brentford. Daniel Farke said it was well deserved, praising Stach’s consistency in the Premier League, rapid adaptation and all-round influence, from duels and ball-winning to goals, assists and versatility.
